boot locking problems

Posted by private, Tue 19 Nov 2019 6:41 pm
Hiya , just wanted to ask about a problem i have with my mk5 golf. When i lock it with the fob my hazards go off as if the alarm is going off every 5 mins. I've checked all the door sensors and they are all ok but when i lift the boot nothing appears on the dash to say it's open. Also, i can lock it with the boot open. Is this the micro switch in the boot that could be faulty and would a new boot latch solve this? I would appreciate any help.

Hi Shane,

My immediate thought is "check the tailgate wires"! See https://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5/tailgate_snapped_wires I haven't heard of many faulty micro switches or boot latches but broken or almost-broken tailgate wires are common and cause all sorts of weird problems.

Take a look and let me know how you get on,

I will check as soon as i'm home. The boot is working fine locking opening and the bootlight works and all the rear lights work.

Hi Stuart

I've had at look at the wires in both sides and they are all intact. I'm at my wits end.

Hi Shane,

I too initially discounted snapped tailgate wires on my Mk5 as they initially looked ok but after a second look I found an earth wire had snapped right in the middle where it was hard to see. Have you checked if all the hatch’s electrics (rear wiper, washer, fog & reversing lights, etc) still work? If not, I think it will be a snapped wire.

But if you are sure the car does not have snapped tailgate wires I guess it could be a faulty boot latch/microswitch. Not sure how much/how easy this would be to replace.

Hi stuart

I sliced the rubber grommets top to bottom and all was intact , everything works as should . Its currently at the auto electrician. Without looking at it he seems to think it could be an hazard fault but I'll wait and see.

Hi Stuart

Just a little update for you.

Took the car to the auto electrician with one problem came away with 5: boot micro switch, rear door lock, glow plugs, egr valve blocked, and control module. He told me i was looking at around £800 ? Maybe more to sort it out. Gonna look at fixing myself for way less.

Thanks for the update Shane. Sorry for you! £800!!! Ouch. Glow plugs and rear door lock should be relatively easy to replace and cheap. I have info about these on my website. Did he tell you which glow plug(s) needed replacing? I doubt all need replacing. Not sure about the boot micro switch or blocked EGR valve. Which control module?

He never stated which glow plug but going to change all 4 for my own piece of mind. He just said computer module. Thanks for your help,

Hiya stuart

Just thought i would update you on my problems.

Removed egr valve to find a blocking plate so removed and cleaned egr. Changed all four glow plugs , and sprayed the boot latch with wd40. Checked the passenger door gromet to find a lot of wires snapped so soldered them and hey presto car is all sorted for the price of about £100 ??
