Changing fuel filter

Posted by private, Fri 4 Jan 2019 9:29 pm
Hello Stuart,
Like yourself I recently bought a mk7 golf 1.6tdi, my first ever VW and I've found your
web page to be a great source of information.
I'm hoping you would give me some information regarding changing the fuel filter, it seems to be really straight forward other than the conflicting advice regarding the fuel pump.
Some say as long as the diesel is replenished in the fuel filter there is no need to prime the fuel pump. Others say it is vital that it's primed using VCDS [ which I don't have].. Which is correct Stuart.

Many thanks in anticipation you can help. Bob

Hello Bob,

Thank you for your email and telling me about your Golf Mk 7. Unfortunately I've never replaced my car's fuel filter and so have never looked into how easy it would be to DIY. Sorry I can't help answer your query. If you find out, please can you let me know how you get on.

Thanks,
Stuart

Hello Stuart,

Many thanks for getting back to me, it's much appreciated. If I do find out I'll be in touch but so far I've had no luck,

I've always serviced my previous cars myself but this is as I say my first VW and its proving to be problematic.

Air filter & pollen filter couldn't be easier, oil filter a real faff as it's under the engine and cables needed moving but doable

The actual replacing of the fuel filter is so simple and straightforward, a 10 minute job really but I'm reluctant to do it because of the apparent need to prime the fuel pump using VCDS. Apparently the high pressure fuel pump can be damaged if there is air in the fuel lines

One Vw dealer says it needs priming another says they don't do it. I contacted VW customer services but they wouldn't give me an answer but did refer to their website ERWIN but it's double dutch to me.

I suppose I'll just need to have a VW dealer do it in the end.

Many thanks again Stuart

Bob
