Non-matching barcodes on T Discs

I posted this information today on the Tassimo Canada and UK Facebook sites:
"Something I just noticed the other day when I took a used T Disc out of my machine. The side and front barcodes don't match! They aren't even close to being the same pattern, and this is true on all the different brands I have checked since. I don't expect that Tassimo will reveal why. There are several ways to encode the same information into barcodes, so maybe they have switched to a different encoding to get better reliability. After all, the basic instructions to the brewer must be the same to get the same results no matter what the model."
I got some very interesting responses on the UK site. Some commenters thought that the side barcode was for providing brewing info and the front barcode was a product code. This contention was quickly debunked, as it was pointed out that the second generation brewers, the T55 and the T47 can read only the front code. Still they can decode the same brewing instructions.
Stuart, I thought that maybe you or another contributor might recognize the different encoding patterns of the side and front barcodes. One thing to note is that some of the black bars on the front barcode are fatter than any on the side barcode.

My Tassimo T45 machine can only read barcodes on the top/foil side of a T-Disc. Unless other Tassimo models read barcodes from the side I wouldn't be too concerned about a second/different barcode on the side. It may purely represent manufacturing info, e.g. product number, batch number, etc i.e. nothing to do with the brewing process.
Hope that helps,
Stuart

Thanks, Stuart. I got confirmation from Tassimo Canada yesterday that the two barcodes are different encodings of the same brewing instructions. All of the first generation machines, the T20, T45, T46 and T65 as well as previous models) read the side barcode, located at approximately 90 degrees from the tab. The second generation T55 and T47 read the front barcode, the one nearest the tab. So I guess my question still is - does anyone recognize the two different encoding patterns of the two barcodes?
